Rethinking Phanariots in the Ottoman Empire : Post-national approaches to a pre-national culture
Περίληψη ομιλίας
Phanariots were many things to many people, and most of those things are not considered positive in Greek national memory today. Speaking from my book, Biography of an Empire: Governing Ottomans in an Age of Revolution, I will discuss the cultural and social dimensions of Phanariot life in the early 19th century and offer a consideration of their peculiar kind of belonging in Ottoman governance. My premise is that, in order to understand their world, we have to “un-know” the framework of national history and political belonging, and become acquainted anew, paying particular attention to the ways they were engaging with Ottoman officialdom and the symbols they used to garner prestige in Ottoman society.
