Poulos, Assistant Professor, Department of Music Studies, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens<\/p>\n<p><strong>ABSTRACT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mehmet Ali Sanl\u0131kol published \u201cReform, Notation and Ottoman music in Early 19th Century Istanbul: EUTERPE\u201d\u00a0from Routledge\u2019s SOAS series in March of 2023. In this book Sanl\u0131kol presents both a critical edition of\u00a0<em>Euterpe<\/em>, the first printed collection of Ottoman classical vocal music pieces in Byzantine notation, and a detailed study of\u00a0<em>Ermineia<\/em>, thefirst source which explains Ottoman\/Turkish makams with microtonal values, as a result of which an extended analysis of all makams are included as well.<\/p>\n<p>During this presentation Sanl\u0131kol will not only provide his conclusions regarding\u00a0<em>Euterpe<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Ermineia\u00a0<\/em>and related similar publications, but he will also discuss the possible relationship between these publications and the banning of the\u00a0<em>k\u00f6\u00e7ek<\/em>, evaluate the \u2018lead sheet\u2019 and \u2018fake book\u2019 formats widely utilized in jazz within the context of Ottoman\/Turkish music, compare the relationship between\u00a0<em>vezin<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>usul<\/em>\u00a0with jazz from several different perspectives, and present his thoughts on several other similar issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SHORT BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Grammy nominated composer (2015 and 2024) Mehmet Ali Sanl\u0131kol graduated from Berklee College of Music with a dual degree in Jazz Composition and Film Scoring in 1997. Sanl\u0131kol completed his Master\u2019s degree in Jazz Composition at the New England Conservatory (NEC) in 2000 after which he got his doctorate from the same school in Composition in 2004. During his doctoral studies Sanl\u0131kol heavily focused on ethnomusicology and classical Ottoman\/Turkish music after which he also conducted post-doctoral research with Prof. Cemal Kafadar at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University as a fellow (2013-15).
